Driver's License Category AM

With a Category AM license (introduced on January 19, 2013), you are permitted to drive both small 45 km/h scooters and small 45 km/h quads. Category AM gives 15-year-old driving students a sense of freedom from the domestic taxi service, and offers parents a bit of peace from the phrase, “Can you just drive me to xyz?”

The required training modules consist of 12 basic theory lessons and 2 specialized theory lessons for Category A, while the practical training requires only a few regular practice lessons. Their number depends on the student’s skills and prior road experience.

For a subsequent Category B license, obtaining Category AM reduces the 12 basic theory lessons to just 6. It also provides advantages for practical training, as the student will have already gained significant road experience.

Training is conducted on a Piaggio scooter.

The prices shown are components of the total cost for a Category AM driver’s license. The major unknown variable is the number of driving lessons. In our region, a student driver of average ability typically requires about 14 to 20 lessons throughout their training. Naturally, the actual number of lessons can vary significantly, either upwards or downwards, depending on the individual.

The fees for the official application at the licensing office range from €40 to €60, depending on the region. Additionally, the first aid course, eye test, and passport photo could cost between €50 and €70.

If a theoretical or practical exam is not passed, the same costs will unfortunately be incurred again for the retake: TÜV fees and the driving school’s fee for presenting the student for the exam. If the practical exam needs to be repeated, a few additional practice lessons are usually necessary as well.
