Driver's License Category A1
The Category A1 license is the first “real” driver’s license for a 16-year-old student. Holding an A1 license means that the sometimes tedious probationary period begins at just 16 years of age. The required training modules correspond to those of the Category B license: 12 basic theory lessons, 2 specialized motorcycle theory lessons, 5 cross-country drives, 4 highway drives, and 3 night drives.
If a student obtained a Category A1 license at age 16, upgrading to Category A2 requires only a brief practical test, which can be taken two years after acquiring the A1. A full training course, as was required until January 18, 2013, is no longer necessary.
Obtaining a Category A1 license provides significant advantages for later getting a Category B license, as very few regular practice lessons will be required.
Training is conducted on a HONDA CB 125R with ABS. The motorcycle rides almost like a bicycle, is extremely agile, and is therefore perfectly suited for training purposes.

If a theoretical or practical exam is not passed, the same costs will unfortunately be incurred again for the retake: TÜV fees and the driving school’s fee for presenting the student for the exam. If the practical exam needs to be repeated, a few additional practice lessons are usually necessary as well.
