Driver Code B196: Motorcycles with a Car License
The code B196 allows holders of a Class B driving license to ride Class A1 motorcycles without having to pass a full practical or theoretical exam.
What can you ride?
With the B196 extension, you are permitted to ride light motorcycles (including scooters) with the following specifications:
Requirements
To obtain the B196 entry, the following criteria must be met:
Advantages and Limitations:
| Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|
| No exam: neither theoretical nor practical at TÜV/DEKRA | Domestic only: valid exclusively within Germany |
| Cost-effective: significantly cheaper than obtaining Class A directly | No upgrade: upgrading to Class A2 or A later is not possible through a simple exam |
| Fast: the course can often be completed within a few days | No extension: it is a purely national code |
How does the process work?
First, you register at a driving school for the B196 course. This typically includes 4 theory sessions (90 minutes each) and 5 practical sessions (90 minutes each). Upon successful completion, the driving school issues a certificate. With this certificate and a current passport photo, you visit the driver’s license office to have the code added to your license.
Important: no more than one year may pass between completing the course and having the code entered in your license.
The full price of the B196 course at our driving school is €680.
The B96 license allows driving a car with a trailer up to a maximum permissible total mass of the combination of 4,250 kg.
