Direct entry into the large motorcycle category, Category A, is possible at the earliest at age 24 (effective since January 19, 2013). In most cases, students already hold a driver’s license for cars, meaning they only need to complete 6 basic theory lessons and 4 specialized theory lessons for Category A. Regarding special driving lessons, they must complete 5 cross-country drives, 4 highway drives, and 3 night drives, just as they would for a car license. The number of regular practice lessons required depends on several factors, ranging from as few as 2 lessons (if they already hold a Category A2 license) to over 20 hours.
Training is conducted on a Kawasaki Z650 with 50 kW and, of course, ABS. The motorcycle is extremely agile, making it perfectly suited for driving school training. Heated grips also provide a touch of luxury on cooler days.
Class A — Sample Cost Calculation:
| Category A | Qty | Unit price | Tüv exam fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registration fee, standard, no prior license | €600,00 | ||
| Practical driving (45 min) | ? | €72,00 | |
| Country road driving (45 min) | 5 | €82,00 | |
| Autobahn driving (45 min) | 4 | €82,00 | |
| Night driving (45 min) | 3 | €82,00 | |
| Theory exam entry | 1 | €100,00 | €24,99 |
| Practical exam entry | 1 | €200,00 | €162,67 |
The prices shown are components of the total cost for Category A, A2, and A1 driver’s licenses. The major unknown variable is the number of driving lessons. In our region, a student driver of average ability typically requires about 12 to 16 lessons throughout their training. Naturally, the number of individual lessons can vary significantly, either upwards or downwards, depending on factors such as prior driving experience or natural aptitude.
The fees for the official application at the licensing office range from €40 to €60, depending on the region. Additionally, the first aid course, eye test, and passport photo could cost between €50 and €70.
If a theoretical or practical exam is not passed, the same costs will unfortunately be incurred again for the retake: TÜV fees and the driving school’s fee for presenting the student for the exam. If the practical exam needs to be repeated, a few additional practice lessons are usually necessary as well.
