Additional information about Category B with code B197:
Theory Training and Exam
There are no differences in the theoretical training and exam compared to standard Category B.
Practical Training and Exam
Basic Training
Basic training takes place predominantly in an automatic vehicle. It may also be started in a manual vehicle.
Special Training Drives
Special training drives may be conducted partly in an automatic vehicle and partly in a manual vehicle.
Exam Preparation / Exam Readiness Assessment
Exam preparation and the assessment of exam readiness take place in an automatic vehicle.
Readiness Assessment / Test Drive
A test drive of at least 15 minutes is required. It must be successfully completed before the practical driving exam. The test drive may only be carried out once at least 10 training hours in a manual vehicle have been completed. During the test drive, the driving instructor confirms that the student can operate the manual vehicle safely, responsibly, and in an environmentally conscious manner. Upon successful completion of the test drive, the student receives a certificate.
Practical Exam
The exam drive takes place in an automatic vehicle.
Further Information
Is it permitted to drive a manual vehicle abroad with a license bearing code 197? Yes, the three-digit code has national significance only and merely documents that the practical driving exam was taken in an automatic vehicle. It has no restrictive effect and is therefore irrelevant outside of Germany.
Are there any disadvantages of Category B with code 197 compared to Category B without a code? Initially, there are no disadvantages whatsoever. After passing the exam, both licenses permit driving the same vehicles. However, disadvantages may arise if an additional license category is obtained at a later stage.

The prices shown are components of the total cost for Category B, BF17, B197, and B78 driver’s licenses. The major unknown variable is the number of driving lessons. In our region, a student driver of average ability typically requires about 15 to 20 lessons throughout their training. Naturally, the number of individual lessons can vary significantly, either upwards or downwards, depending on the person.
The fees for the official application at the licensing office range from €40 to €60, depending on the region. Additionally, the first aid course, eye test, and passport photo could cost between €50 and €70.
If a theoretical or practical exam is not passed, the same costs will unfortunately be incurred again for the retake: TÜV fees and the driving school’s fee for presenting the student for the exam. If the practical exam needs to be repeated, a few additional practice lessons are usually necessary as well.
